Novo Mesto’s Jane’s Walk walked the paths along the Krka river and the narrow streets of the old town centre, the slow pace offering a perfect opportunity to meet new acquaintances and exchange ideas with people interested in nature, leisure, healthy life and care for public open spaces. Along the way, the designers of some buildings and urban landscapes that we visited spoke about their spaces with the 48 participants of the walk.

The old centre of Novo Mesto developed on winding bends of the Krka River, forming the distinct image of the town. However, the riverbanks currently fail to allow the best use of the space, with great potential for recreation and social gathering. Due to the lack of bridges the river primarily poses an obstacle to traffic and urban development.

We talked about the building and maintaining of the paths on the riverbanks, housing in the town centre, the planned bridges and access points to the water, spatial planning in the town centre, natural features in the river area and about the idea of an archaeological park above the town centre.

The participants carefully listened to the presentations and explanations by the architects, the landscape architect, the archaeologist and the biologist about some interesting details and problems, and they also contributed their own reflections. In this way, we learned a lot from each other, exchanged information and views and, above all, shared the opinion that similar walks shall be organised more often.

The issues raised during this walk have already been presented to the Mayor of Novo Mesto as a proposal for further legislation surrounding public open spaces and urban development in Novo Mesto. Imagine what we could achieve with more Jane’s Walks!
