The area around Vienna’s Franz-Joseph-Bahnhof Railway Station is undergoing rapid transformation, especially following the departure of the University of Business and Economics and a major bank four years ago. Another major bank is set to leave the area in 2018. The area is a central transportation hub, but also represents a major barrier in Vienna’s Alsergrund District and will undergo massive redevelopment in the coming years.

Our walk leader, Johannes Lutz, is a local resident who shared thoughts on this transformation and some personal insights about the neighborhood. He pointed out a nearby kindergarten that teaches sign language and a public urban gardening project. While we had interesting discussions on the transformation of the neighbourhood and possible ideas such as an elevated park, the highlight of the walk was when Johannes used LEGO and a cucumber to build his own urban planning model to illustrate proposed changes to the neighbourhood.
