Urban sociologist Cornelia Dlabaja knows a lot about Vienna, its people, and the texture and urban fabric of the city. She loves to give insights into the work of Jane Jacobs, tell local stories and anecdotes, and discuss current issues of social equity and urban development in Vienna. It was no surprise that there was huge interest into her exploration of hidden inner city passages and courtyards in Vienna’s Historic Centre and vibrant Neubau District.

Her walk was full of surprises! We discovered that you can find quiet places in the center of Austrian capital nearby busy streets and green spaces in the inner courtyards of neighbourhoods where you might think there would be a lack of green public spaces. We also learned how easy it is to get from one place to another if you take the open passages and courtyards instead of walking around the large housing blocks.
