Perth is one of the most isolated major cities in the world (second only to Auckland), with one of the largest inner-city parks in the world. With the city centred on the beautiful and sacred Derbarl Yerrigan, or Swan River, Perth stretches 125 km along the coast between the gorgeous beaches of the Indian Ocean on the west, and the stunning country of “the hills” to the east. With an average of 8 hours of sunshine a day, many would consider Perth a walker's paradise, but the heat, the sprawl and the lacking public transport infrastructure force too many to stick with the daily car commute. It’s a pity because walking in Perth is a joy, and the only way to discover the outstanding natural beauty, the many layers of stories, and interesting goings-on of the city, from the ground up.
