This year’s Jane’s Walk in Asan was all about rediscovering the city through ordinary eyes. The area around Onyang-Oncheon Station is a familiar place for many locals, but during our walk, we saw how much history and hidden charm lives in the everyday.
One of the most memorable moments was when we passed an old barbershop tucked into a quiet alley. Through the dusty glass, the vintage chairs and tools looked frozen in time. A participant smiled and said, “My dad used to get his hair cut here when he was a kid.” That one comment made everyone pause and see the space with new affection.
We also planned a safety activity called “Eyes of the Owl,” where we placed owl-shaped stickers in dimly lit or overlooked corners. Although one area had to be skipped due to complaints, the idea itself sparked meaningful conversations about how we observe and care for our urban spaces.
More than anything, what surprised and delighted us was how strangers quickly became friends through shared memories and stories. Asan may seem quiet, but it’s full of depth—and walking together allowed us to uncover its layers of memory, warmth, and meaning.
