Hillhurst Sunnyside has a reputation of being an expensive neighbourhood to live in, but there are a variety of housing options many aren’t aware of. HSCA Planning Committee staff Lisa Chong and resident Dekker Buztner (Jane Jacobs nephew) led an interesting walk through Hillhurst/Sunnyside to introduce participants to the many alternative housing options in our neighbourhood. A resident talked about her challenges building a container house with laneway suite across from the Community Centre. The Brenda Stafford Centre introduced us to the Women’s Shelter for women and children. Horizon Housing Society showed us the highrise apartment building that serves tenants with a variety of special needs including individuals living with mental health challenges, physical disabilities, families and seniors living below the poverty line and the working poor. We were taken to Aurora on the Park, a 25 unit, fully accessible building constructed specifically to support vulnerable Calgarians experiencing homelessness . Norfolk Housing Association described their mission to create inclusive and affordable communities for people of all socioeconomic backgrounds through a unique model that mixes market and rent-geared-to-income rentals. Sunnyside Sustainable Housing is planning to build several affordable townhouses across from Sunnyside School to house single parents & their families, as well as restoring and renovating two cottages to create 4 rental units with the addition of 2 laneway houses. Norfolk Housing Association’s mission is to create inclusive and affordable communities for people of all socioeconomic backgrounds through a unique model that mixes market and rent-geared-to-income rentals. A representative from the City of Calgary met us at the “triangle site” to explore possibilities for a dynamic community gathering place that will include affordable housing. All in all we still have a diverse population from many economic backgrounds living and contributing to our community.
