May 2013 – Discovering the Wrightville Neighbourhood

The walk took place in the blue-collar neighbourhood of Wrightville, in the Hull district of Gatineau (near Ottawa). I knew little about Wrightville; only that it was one of the oldest parts of the city, with a colorful history.
On this walk, I found the neighbourhood of my childhood: neighbours being neighbourly, kids running and playing in the street, scurrying from one house to another and being greeted warmly by the adults inside. I was completely charmed!
Not only did I learn about the history of the neighbourhood, I spoke with people from the area and visited some local meeting spots. I also noticed some charming little houses for sale. Later, I came back with my spouse; we retraced the route of the Jane’s Walk, and I showed her one of the houses I had seen. A month later, we owned a small, 70-year-old house in Wrightville—discovered for the first time during the Jane’s Walk.
En 2012, j’ai participé pour la première fois à une marche Jane non seulement en tant que participant, mais aussi comme bénévole. La marche avait lieu dans le quartier populaire de Wrightville, dans le secteur Hull de la ville de Gatineau (tout près d’Ottawa).
Je connaissais un peu ce quartier, mais mal. Je savais que cette partie de la ville en était une des plus anciennes, avec une histoire colorée, mais rien de plus. Je fus entièrement séduit ! Je retrouvais le quartier de mon enfance : voisins se côtoyant, enfants qui couraient, s’amusant dans la rue, détalant d’une maison à l’autre et accueillis par les adultes à l’intérieur.
Lors de la marche Jane, je n’ai pas simplement appris sur l’histoire du quartier, j’ai aussi bien discuté avec des gens du milieu et visiter leurs lieux de rencontre et j’ai surtout bien remarqué quelques charmantes petites maisons à vendre. À mon retour à la maison, j’emportai ma conjointe refaire le même trajet que ma marche Jane, et je lui fît visiter une des maisons que j’avais aperçues. Un mois plus tard, nous étions propriétaire d’une petite maison de 70 ans dans ce même quartier, visité pour une première fois lors d’une marche Jane.
